Miriam Defensor-Santiago, who passed away at age 71 just this morning, described her last service to the Filipinos as a blessing.

Former senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, the tough-talking lady in the Senate, thanked everyone in her official Twitter account and wished them the best for the country.

Dated last June 30, she thanked everyone as she returns to her private life after losing the presidential bid to Rodrigo Duterte.

"Today marks the first day of my return to private life. It has been a blessing to be given the opportunity to serve our country and the Filipino people. Thank you very much! God bless the Philippines!" she said with the caption "Beam me up, Scotty!" from the famous sci-fi movie Star Trek.

After that, she did not give any personal statements to the public due to her health concerns.

She died from complications of lung cancer, her husband confirmed to news outlets. He said she died in her sleep.
